Since I have two boys, I am always concerned with their behavior and whether they are disturbing other people with their loud voices. Mostly, of course, they are well-behaved and I don’t have to worry. Hofsas House made me a little uncomfortable because sound carries easily through the walls. I hope we didn’t disturb our next-door neighbors the night we stayed there, but since we could hear them very clearly through the walls, I fear they could also hear us. I would never want to ruin someone’s vacation because my kids were playing in our hotel room.

The only downside to staying at Hofsas is that some walls are thin. So, if you’re looking for absolute peace and quiet, this might not be the right place to choose. Fred Hofsas, also an artist, created the mosaic coat of arms. The Latin words mean “Leisure with Dignity.” The art around the hotel gives it a unique and comforting feeling when you visit. You’ll discover beautiful paintings from artist Maxine Albro while wandering around the hotel.

Hofsas House Hotel Family-Friendly Lodging

There were several families with small children and doggies sitting outside with us. My husband ordered the California Classic Burger and I enjoyed the Fish & Chips. Carmel-by-the-Sea is known for being a very dog-friendly vacation destination, and you can also bring your pup to stay at the Hofsas House with you. The decor piece that I especially loved in our hotel room was the antique vanity.

In 1957, Donna had her friend, Maxine, paint the Bavarian-themed welcome mural at the front of the building. You can also find three other pictures of Albro’s in the lobby. Donna and Fred Hofsas co-founded the Hofsas House in 1947, and 75 years later, the hotel is still in the family. Donna Hofsas’ grandchildren and daughter-in-law keep her legacy alive by continuing to operate the iconic Carmel hotel. Scheid has a large presence in the area with eleven estate vineyards located along a 70-mile spread of the Salinas Valley with 4,000 acres of vineyards. They sell the majority of their production as custom-made wines to other wineries.

Pet friendly rooms

This 38-room German-chalet-style boutique hotel is unique for multiple reasons. First, it actually has a few on-site facilities, including a well-kept (and attractive) heated pool and two saunas. While there aren't any dining options on-site, the hotel's location is perfect for parking the car and walking to the downtown Carmel area. While my family does not have mobility challenges, Hofsas House has accessible rooms for patrons with this need. There are no elevators and most rooms require climbing stairs.

Breakfast can be enjoyed in the shared dining area or on the patio with ocean views. This charming hotel is 1.8 mi from Pebble Beach and 1.1 mi from Carmel Mission. My family and I stayed in Carmel recently as guests of Hofsas House, a family-run boutique hotel just a few short blocks from the center of town. We love to visit the Monterey area and wanted to explore Carmel more this time. We had a wonderful dinner at the Beach House in Pacific Grove and got tasty sandwiches from the 5th Avenue Deli for a picnic the next day.

Art Around the Hofsas House Hotel

Nestled in the picturesque town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Hofsas House Hotel is a charming boutique inn that has been family-run for 75 years. They celebrate their milestone anniversary this year, making it the perfect time to visit. While the beaches are beautiful in Carmel, the ocean water is definitely on the chilly side and requires a wetsuit for swimming. But luckily the Hofsas House has a heated pool were you can jump in for a leisurely swim. Scout really loved her playtime in the pool, we had a hard time getting her out!

My husband had a beautiful pork chop on a bed of mashed potatoes with Brussels sprouts on the side, and my son tried their stuffed chicken in a lemon caper glaze. The Beach House in Pacific Grove serves a terrific, California-inspired menu in one of the most scenic spots around. The windows look out through the trees and the ocean views are stunning.

Ms. Theis is available to personally assist guests with planning their events. We were told there are only a few hotels in town that offer rooms with two beds, Hofsas House being one of them, which is something families count on. And chain stores are banned in Carmel, so you won’t find a Starbucks or Pizza Hut on any of the admittedly adorable streets. Carmel-by-the-Sea is trying to improve its Family-Friendly offerings, but I’m afraid it has further to go. The town is picture-perfect but is filled with art galleries, expensive jewelry stores, and fancy resort wear. These are not stores kids care anything about, so there’s nothing for them to look at – or let’s face it, touch – which is what kids do.

For the adults, there’s a dry sauna to help you warm up when you exit the pool. Carmel By-The-Sea is also one of the most dog-friendly towns in the country. If your animal friend isn’t welcome in most places, Carmel is the perfect town for you to visit because almost everywhere welcomes dogs – including restaurants and hotels. The town is located on the Monterey Peninsula, about 120 miles south of San Francisco.

The Lone Cypress is a solitary tree out on the cliff that has braved the elements for the past 250 years. The Pacific ocean is a gorgeous dark blue along the cliffs. Revisiting the 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach was on my to-do list. In order to accommodate my short attention-spanned teen, Ms. Theis mapped out a shorter route that included the coastal highlights. We exited at the Pacific Grove gate where our next destination was located. Our last stop before we hit the road was at the highly recommended 5th Avenue Deli for sandwiches to go.

The place had charm and loved the dutch doors to see the view and get fresh air. Everything - from the second we checked in until we left. Great hospitality, nice welcome, lovely room, nice view, comfortable bedding, and nice morning breakfast greeting. There is so much more to see and do in and around Carmel-by-the-Sea and the Monterey Bay area.

There are many charming houses along the Scenic Road, we had fun taking a leisurely walk to observe all the unique architecture of the homes. There’s also a very clean and modern public restroom on the trail, probably the best one I’ve ever seen at a beach. Our hotel room was located on the top floor and we enjoyed panoramic ocean views from our hotel room. In the morning you experience the colorful sunrise and in the evening watch the sunset over the horizon.
